Obey Proposes $5.7 Billion Disaster Relief Supplemental

House Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D-Wis.) has proposed a $5.8 billion supplemental spending bill for disaster relief, summer jobs and small-business loan subsidies.

Obey’s legislation would include $5.1 billion in emergency disaster relief, $600 million for a summer jobs program for 300,000 young people and $60 million for small-business loans.

Obey’s office said $2 billion in disaster relief projects are on hold while awaiting funding at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The summer jobs program and the small-business loans would be offset by rescinding other funding from the stimulus package and other sources, but the disaster relief would add to the deficit.
