HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Family Ties

There are several family legacies on Capitol Hill, but one has been quietly flying under the radar — until now.

The Washington Post ran a photo gallery this week on Hill aide Mikael Moore, who rose from a lowly staff assistant to become chief of staff to Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.).

Moore’s career rise involves plenty of hard work and dedication, but there’s a twist: Moore happens to be Waters’ grandson.

But don’t assume Moore rose through the ranks because of nepotism, the feature notes. Moore, who also served as Waters’ scheduler and communications director, doesn’t even call her “Grandma” — it’s always “Congresswoman.”

And Waters doesn’t like to talk about her personal relationship with Moore, preferring to focus on his work in the office.

“He has a good policy sense and natural leadership skills,” she tells the Post.
