Hawaii: Ex-Governor Says Djou Would Be ‘Nightmare’

With only days remaining for undecided voters to make up their minds and mail in their ballots in the special House election, Charles Djou (R) is on the air with an ad targeting Ed Case (D), and three former governors asked voters not to send Djou to Washington.

Ex-Gov. John Waihee called the prospect of a Djou victory “a nightmare,” the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported.

Joining him at a news conference, former Gov. George Ariyoshi said, “You don’t know what he stands for,” and ex-Gov. Ben Cayetano warned voters that Djou is “walking lock step with the national Republicans.”

In response, Jonah Kaauwai, chairman of the Hawaii Republican Party, told the newspaper that the news conference of past governors was “a last-minute attempt to hold on to power by people who have shown us how bad things can be when they have it.”

Democrats are worried about losing this seat because there’s no primary. It’s a multi-candidate, multi-party special election, and Case is splitting that party’s vote with state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa.

The latest Djou ad says, “Just like the Hawaii’s changing trade winds, Ed Case changes his positions daily.”

Case called the ad evidence that Djou is scared and desperate. “He feels this slipping away from him,” Case told KITV.
