A recent poll done for the campaign of former Rep. Steve Chabot (R) gave him a 14-point lead over Rep. Steve Driehaus (D) in their rematch in Ohio’s 1st district.

Chabot led Driehaus 53 percent to 39 percent in the Public Opinion Strategies poll of 400 likely voters in the Cincinnati-based district, which was taken May 12-13. The poll also found 34 percent of voters indicated the Congressman deserves re-election and 49 percent said it’s time for someone new.

“Not only is the political environment providing the wind at Steve Chabot’s back, but Congressman Driehaus’ vote in support of health care reform has rubbed voters in this conservative district the wrong way,” POS pollster Neil Newhouse wrote in a Monday polling memo.

In 2008, Driehaus unseated Chabot, then a seven-term Member, by 5 points.

Republicans have criticized Driehaus’ vote for the health care bill, which they said didn’t include adequate provisions to bar federal funding of abortion. The 1st district is heavily Catholic, and both Driehaus and Chabot oppose abortion rights.

Driehaus said the bill included an executive order to prohibit federal funding of abortion and defended his vote for legislation he described as “a historic step forward.”

A January poll that SurveyUSA conducted for the liberal website Firedoglake had Chabot ahead of Driehaus by 17 points.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Driehaus have signaled they will bring up Chabot’s support for most major policies of President George W. Bush.

“I will compare Bush to Obama any day of the week,” Driehaus recently told Roll Call.
