Kansas: Tiahrt Getting Help, but Moran Still Holds Lead

Rep. Todd Tiahrt is getting a special fundraising boost just before the Aug. 3 GOP Senate primary — and the start of the NFL season.

Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Charlie Weis will be the featured guest at a Tiahrt fundraiser on July 23 at a private home in Olathe, a suburb of Kansas City.

Weis is a former head football coach at Notre Dame University, and tickets to the event are $100 to $1,000 per couple.

Tiahrt announced Wednesday that he raised $451,000 in the second quarter and ended June with a little less than $1.3 million in the bank.

Tiahrt is facing Rep. Jerry Moran, who has led in most polls and continues to lead in the fundraising chase. Moran announced Wednesday he had raised $538,000 in the second quarter, and he began July with nearly $2.3 million in the bank.

Former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), a leading opponent of illegal immigration, switched his support from Moran to Tiahrt this week.

The Moran campaign released a poll Wednesday showing the Congressman with a solid lead over his rival as the primary approaches.

According to the poll of 450 likely GOP primary voters conducted July 11-13 by Public Opinion Strategies Moran was preferred by 56 percent to Tiahrt’s 24 percent. The poll had a 4.6-point error margin.
