Senators Heading to Lunch With Obama

President Barack Obama is scheduled Wednesday to lunch with a group of Senate Democrats at the White House, according to sources.

The meeting comes as Senate Democrats are struggling to find the votes to pass some of the Obama administration’s summer priorities prior to adjourning for the August recess, including a small-business lending package and legislation to provide federal funding to the states to retain teachers and first responders.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) announced Tuesday that he was scrapping plans to bring up an oil liability bill. But the chamber is on course to confirm Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Solicitor General Elena Kagan. A procedural vote on the teacher and first responders funding bill was scheduled for Wednesday morning.
