New Poll Shows Kirk and Giannoulias Neck and Neck

A new Rasmussen Reports poll showed 41 percent of Illinois voters plan to support Republican nominee Rep. Mark Kirk in the November election and 37 percent would choose Democratic nominee Alexi Giannoulias. Green Party candidate LeAlan Jones got 9 percent.

The totals include those who are only leaning toward one candidate or the other. The survey of 750 likely voters was taken Tuesday and had a margin of error of 4 points. Among those who said they have made up their mind about who they will support, 37 percent chose Kirk, 34 percent chose Giannoulias and 12 percent chose Jones.

A similar Rasmussen poll from two weeks ago showed Kirk and Giannoulias tied at 45 percent each when leaners were included.

Both campaigns unveiled new ads yesterday, the day after the poll was conducted. Giannoulias’ ad featured an endorsement from President Barack Obama, who held the seat until he was elected president. Kirk’s ad described the Republican as an independent, effective and thoughtful leader.
