Hilloween, Capitol Hill’s traditional family celebration, will offer hayrides, a moon bounce, carousel rides, balloons, candy and food Friday at Eastern Market (Seventh Street Southeast). The gathering is free and runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Also Friday, the U.S. Navy Museum (Sixth and M streets Southeast) invites children to step aboard Ghost Ship Barry for a haunted tour of the Cold War-era vessel. Navy sailors put the event together, building the coffins, designing the decorations and choreographing their parts in the tour. The haunting starts at 6 p.m. and will be “low key” for kids younger than 12 during the first hour. Participants must RSVP by calling the museum at 202-433-0280.

Kids might also want to try the Haunted Train and Creepy Carousel rides at Wheaton Regional Park in Maryland (2002 Shorefield Road). The park, less than a mile from Glenmont Metro stop, will be open Friday and Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $6 or $5 with a donation of canned food.

Haunted Houses

Thrill-seekers should visit the House of the Vampyres and Sanctuary of Insanity at Bennett’s Curse (8024 Max Blobs Park Road) in Jessup, Md. Although customers must drive halfway to Baltimore for the visit, the attraction is rated one of “America’s Best Haunts” and is said to be well worth the gas money. The attraction is open from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and tickets range from $25 to $35.

Cox Farms’ Fields of Fears (15621 Braddock Road) in Centerville, Va., also offers haunted trails and cornfields. Tickets are $15, and the attraction is open from 7:30 to 11 p.m. this weekend.

Adults-Only Parties

There are a number of adults-only costume parties around town from Silver Spring, Md., to Alexandria, Va. Be sure to leave the kids at home Saturday and bring your ID to the 11th annual Nightmare on M Street. Perhaps the area’s largest costumed bar crawl, 15 bars will participate and, according to one organizer, about 7,000 people are expected to attend. The cost is $20 at the door and $15 for advanced registration. The crawl starts at 5 p.m. and runs until 1 a.m.

The 16th annual Boo and Brew at the Westin Hotel (1400 M St. NW) on Saturday will award the best costume a $300 gift certificate to Surfside taco bar and the best group costume a $500 bar tab at Smith Point or the Bullpen. The night of dancing and merriment starts at 9:30 p.m., and tickets are $70, drinks included. Wear a costume or you won’t get through the door.

If you’re not too chicken to walk around cemeteries after dusk, join Congressional Cemetery’s Ghosts and Goblets Soirée (1801 E St. SE) on Saturday. Tickets are $75, with all-you-can-eat mini hamburgers and pastries and all-you-can-drink alcoholic beverages included. Guests will take tours of the cemetery by torchlight and may come across some of the famous dead that are buried there for eternity. The party starts at 6 p.m., and reservations are required.

Dancing Like Michael Jackson

If none of the above suits your fancy, join Joy of Motion Dance Center at 7 p.m. Friday for a “Thriller” workshop. Who wouldn’t want to learn those iconic Michael Jackson moves and perform them under the stars? Those interested can assemble in the AutoZone parking lot at 1207 H St. NE. Costumes are recommended, and tickets are $25 on the Joy of Motion website.
