Bachmann Aide: Boehner Comments Taken Out of Context

Rep. Michele Bachmann is trying to backpedal on reports that she is not fully committed to supporting Minority Leader John Boehner (Ohio) for Speaker should Republicans win the majority Tuesday.

Bachmann said Thursday in a debate on Minnesota Public Radio that she would look at all the candidates running for Speaker.

“Right now, we don’t know exactly who the candidates will be. It may be John Boehner,” Bachmann said during the debate. “If John Boehner’s the only candidate running, I’ll be voting for John Boehner. I would look at all the candidates and weight it accordingly.”

Bachmann spokesman Sergio Gor said the Minnesota Republican’s comments were taken out of context.

“As far as she knows, Boehner is the only one running and she is supporting him,” he said. “She doesn’t want to speculate on other candidates.”

Bachmann will not mount her own campaign for Speaker, Gor said.

“She absolutely is not interested in that position,” he said. “She’s interested in getting re-elected in the 6th district.”
