Skelton Knocked Out in Missouri
A second powerful House Democrat was toppled tonight as Rep. Ike Skelton (D) was defeated in Missouri’s 4th district. Skelton, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, lost to former state Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R) after 17 terms in the House Skelton’s loss followed the defeat of Rep. John Spratt (D-S.C.), chairman of the Budget Committee.
The last time he had a competitive election was in 1982, when redistricting placed him in a district with another incumbent.
Hartzler won’t be the only new Representative from Missouri. Republican auctioneer Billy Long will represent the seat Rep. Roy Blunt currently holds. The race for Rep. Russ Carnahan’s seat in the St. Louis area is still too close to call against Republican Ed Martin. The other six members of the Missouri House delegation were re-elected.
Earlier tonight, Blunt was elected to the Senate to replace retiring Sen. Kit Bond (R).
