Rep. Gerry Connolly has been hospitalized for an undisclosed matter but is expected to head home this weekend.

The Virginia Democrat visited his doctor earlier this week for a checkup and ended up staying in the hospital for further tests at his doctor’s recommendation, according to Connolly’s chief of staff, James Walkinshaw.

“The details are a private matter, but he is doing well and will be heading home this weekend. He expects to be back to work for the people of Northern Virginia on Monday,” Walkinshaw said in a Friday statement.

Connolly’s hospitalization comes as the votes are still being tallied in his tight race against GOP challenger Keith Fimian for the House seat in Virginia’s 11th district. Connolly issued a statement Friday declaring victory based on voter canvassing being over, but the race still has not been officially called.

“With the vote count complete, I want to reiterate my deep gratitude to the voters of the 11th Congressional District of Virginia for electing me to a second term in the U.S. House of Representatives,” Connolly said in his statement.

Walkinshaw also said in the victory statement that it is Fimian’s “prerogative to seek a recount, but, quite frankly, it would be a waste of taxpayer dollars.”
