Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) has created a recount fund to bankroll her post-election fight with Joe Miller over her write-in candidacy, and she will begin raising money for the fund Monday at a noontime event in Washington.

According to a copy of an invitation to the fundraiser obtained by Roll Call, donors are asked to join the her on Monday afternoon for a luncheon to benefit the Alaska Voter Defense Fund, which Murkowski has set up to pay for any recounts or ballot challenges.

Although no specific contribution is requested — attendees are simply asked to “please give what you can” — the invitation notes that individuals can give a maximum of $2,400 and political action committees can donate a total of $5,000.

State officials are expected to begin counting the Senate write-in ballots — which currently lead Miller’s tally by a wide margin — Wednesday, and they hope to be finished by Nov. 12. But Miller, a tea party favorite, has said he will mount a vigorous legal challenge during the vote-counting process that could drag out the outcome for weeks.

According to the invitation, “Funds raised will be used to pay for expenses resulting from a recount, election contest, counting of provisional and absentee ballots and ballots cast in polling places as well as post election litigation and administrative proceeding expenses concerning the casting and counting of ballots during the Federal election and related costs and expenses.”
