Clyburn Touts Events in Runup to Whip Election

House Majority Whip James Clyburn is touting the events that he will headline this weekend in Pennsylvania, Alabama and Texas, as he tries to build support for his bid to be Minority Whip in the next Congress.

The South Carolina Democrat’s office sent out an e-mail outlining his schedule: He will the will deliver the keynote address Friday afternoon at the National Conference on Health Disparities in Philadelphia, then later in the evening he will receive the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award at the annual Birmingham Civil Rights Institute’s anniversary dinner.

And on Monday, Clyburn will speak to the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ Council of Presidents at a luncheon in Dallas.

The South Carolina lawmaker will square off next week against Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.) for the No. 2 Democratic leadership job in the 112th Congress. Leadership elections are slated to take place Wednesday.
