Democrat Bob Etheridge Concedes in N.C.
A Democratic source says Rep. Bob Etheridge will concede this afternoon to Republican Renee Ellmers. North Carolina’s 2nd district was one of the last remaining undecided races, and will conclude today when the results of a recount are announced.
Etheridge has already scheduled a 3 p.m. press conference in Raleigh. An Etheridge spokesman declined to comment on what Etheridge will say, but the numbers don’t look good for the Democrat. The Associated Press called this race on election night and a source confirmed the afternoon event is a concession speech.
Ellmers, who has been in Washington, D.C., this week attending freshman orientation, held a 1,489-vote lead going into the recount.
The results released today will be unofficial until the state Board of Elections certifies all of the state’s races on Nov. 23.
There are five outstanding House races remaining.
Update, 3:05 p.m.: The concession is now official.
Saying his life “has truly been the American dream,” Etheridge congratulated Ellmers on her victory and said “we came up just a little too short,” according to prepared remarks.
“The combination of the national tide that swept the country, massive amounts of secret corporate cash funding a campaign of distortions, and dirty politics by Washington, D.C., partisan operatives was just too much to overcome,” he said. “But what’s done is done.”
