Retiring Rep. Artur Davis has joined the Washington office of the international law firm SNR Denton, the firm said Monday.

Davis, a centrist black Democrat from Alabama, was elected to the House in 2002. He decided not to run for re-election this year after he waged an unsuccessful primary campaign for Alabama governor.

Davis will focus on criminal and civil fraud matters, including securities and financial crimes as well as regulatory and government investigations, according to a release from the firm.

In announcing his hiring, the firm cited Davis’ service on the House Judiciary Committee, noting he received national attention for interrogating witnesses during high-profile investigations, including the inquiry into the termination of U.S. attorneys during the George W. Bush administration.

Davis has gained a reputation on Capitol Hill as an outspoken Member who deviated from his party, including voting against the health care reform law championed by President Barack Obama. He was the only member of the Congressional Black Caucus to vote in favor of censuring Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) on ethics charges.

He also was on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee and was co-chairman of the moderate New Democratic Coalition. Centrist Democrats such as Davis have been among the more heavily courted former lawmakers as law and lobbying shops look for people who can work with Members of both parties in an era of divided government.
