Second Man Cleared in Shooting

Updated: 6:07 p.m.

The search for a second “person of interest” in the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and 19 other people has ended and the man has been cleared, the Arizona Daily Star reported Sunday.

The man had been seen entering a Safeway grocery store Saturday morning with 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner, shortly before a gunman opened fire on a “Congress on your Corner” event that Giffords was hosting in the parking lot. FBI Director Robert Mueller said Sunday that Loughner will be charged in the attack.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik announced Saturday night that officials were searching for the man. His photo was released to the public early Sunday.

According to the Daily Star, the unidentified man is a cab driver who told investigators that Loughner had been a fare in his cab and that he had taken him to the Safeway. Richard Kastigar, the operations bureau chief of the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, told the paper Sunday that the driver entered the grocery store with Loughner while the younger man was getting change to pay his fare.
