Republican Senate Race Heating Up in Virginia

Tea party Senate candidate Jamie Radtke is calling on her former boss, ex-Sen. George Allen, to meet her in a series of forums leading up to the Virginia GOP primary.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Radtke has asked for “a new kind of Republican primary” that includes weekly forums.

In a recent interview with Roll Call, Radtke criticized Allen’s votes for government budgets and his thousands of earmark requests from when he was a Senator.

She said she was Allen’s receptionist in 1995 for a few months, sitting right outside the then-governor’s executive office in the state Capitol.

“George Allen as governor did some very good things, but in the Senate, he had some problematic votes,” Radtke told Roll Call. “If you return the same politicians to the Senate, you are going to end up with the same result.”

Radtke, 36, is best known in tea party circles for her role as president of the Richmond Tea Party.

Politico’s Playbook reported over the weekend that Allen is expected to announce his candidacy this week.

A spokesman for the former Senator has not responded to repeated requests for comment on Allen’s ambitions.
