President Barack Obama on Saturday gave supporters of the activist group Organizing for America a special preview of his State of the Union address, citing job creation and cutting deficits as central themes.

OFA, the grass-roots arm of the Democratic National Committee, sent an e-mail to supporters that includes a video of Obama discussing Tuesday’s State of the Union address. In the video, the president says the main topic of his remarks will be job creation.

“My principal focus, my No. 1 focus, is going be making sure that we are competitive, that we are growing, and we are creating jobs not just now but well into the future,” he said.

The president said he will also address the need to strengthen education, deal with deficits and debt “in a responsible way,” and run government in a “leaner and smarter” way. All of these things are possible, he said, if people in all parties “are willing to find common ground even as we’re having some very vigorous debates.”

Obama added that he is still working on his speech but wanted to give OFA supporters an early look at what he will say because “you guys have been there from the start, because it was your passion and vision that helped get me to the White House.”
