Kucinich Settles Lawsuit Against Restaurant Associates

Rep. Dennis Kucinich announced on his campaign website Friday that he has resolved his much-publicized lawsuit against Restaurant Associates and other companies that run the House cafeterias.

The Ohio Democrat sued the cafeterias for $150,000 in damages, claiming that he bit into an olive pit in a sandwich wrap purchased from the Longworth House Office Building cafeteria in 2008, which caused dental damage.

“The parties have exchanged information and after some investigation and discussion have resolved the matter for an amount all parties believe reflects the actual out-of-pocket expenses related to this incident,” Kucinich said in a lengthy statement. “The terms of the settlement are confidential; however, I feel that the defendants have responded fairly and reasonably.”

Kucinich says the damage from the olive pit incident was extensive, entailing multiple trips to several dentists. Eventually, the tooth had to be removed and replaced, which required significant bridge work.

“To clarify, no dental expenses were covered by any health plan, nor did I have dental insurance that covered the injury, which, until it was resolved, affected my ability to chew food properly,” Kucinich says.

Now that the suit is resolved, Kucinich said he will no longer discuss the case. “I don’t want to have to make another dental visit for a very long time, and will be making no further comment on this matter,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Restaurant Associates could not be immediately reached for comment Friday afternoon.
