The Democratic National Committee finished 2012 with nearly $16 million in debt, well less than its Republican counterpart, and still had more than $6 million on hand, according to its year-end campaign finance report.

The Republican National Committee had $21 million in debt, according to its report, but new RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement Monday that the debt total, including debt incurred after Dec. 31, is actually $23 million. The RNC had $726,000 in cash on hand at year’s end.

Both committees have $15 million in loans, but the RNC owes an additional $6 million to vendors while the DNC owes $950,000 to vendors, according to their reports.

Both committees continued to raise funds between Nov. 22, which marked the end of the previous filing period, and the end of the year. The RNC did slightly better during those weeks, bringing in $3.6 million compared with the DNC’s $3.1 million.

That meant the DNC raised $149.3 million total during 2010, while the RNC raised $113.6 million.
