Former Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) has joined the Washington, D.C., office of McGuireWoods, the law firm announced Monday.

He will be a senior adviser to McGuireWoods Consulting, the firm’s public affairs subsidiary, according to a press release issued by the firm.

He will advise the firm’s domestic and international clients, particularly those who are affected by government policy.

“Senator Bayh provides a rare and timely perspective for our clients,” Richard Cullen, McGuireWoods’ chairman said in a statement. “Throughout his long career in public service he was known for working with Democrats and Republicans, not to score political points, but rather to drive consensus around issues that mattered most.”

Bayh, a centrist Democrat and former Indiana governor, had been a rising star in the party and had considered running for president. But when he announced his retirement from Congress last year, he blamed partisanship and lack of action in Congress.

In a statement, Bayh said he was honored to join McGuireWoods.

“I’ve always been impressed by the top-notch professionalism, excellent character and collegial atmosphere here,” he said. “The firm’s national and increasingly global presence gives me a broad platform to develop a challenging practice serving a wide variety of clients at the highest level.”

The press release also said that Bayh will be a senior adviser at Apollo Global Management in New York and “will continue to speak on the pressing issues facing our nation and world.”
