Freshman Rep. Karen Bass really wants to make her oath of office stick.

Just a few weeks after the California Democrat was sworn in as a Member of Congress — and even posed with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) for one of those mock swearing-in photos — Bass held another oath of office event Sunday in her hometown of Los Angeles. This time around, Bass was administered a ceremonial oath by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and treated to an afternoon of performances by young residents in her district.

Bass held the event so those unable to make the 3,000-mile journey to D.C. for the actual swearing-in could take part. More than 700 people braved the rain (which is to LA what snow is to D.C.) for the faux swearing-in, held at the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools auditorium, the former site of the Ambassador Hotel (where RFK was assassinated).

California Democratic Reps. Laura Richardson, Judy Chu and Maxine Waters attended, as did LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and former Rep. Diane Watson, whom Bass replaced in the House.

Bass spokesman Adam Sharon tells HOH that it was especially meaningful for Bass to have Pelosi read the oath, considering Pelosi was the first female Speaker of the House and Bass was the first black female Speaker of a state Legislature.
