CREW Asks for Investigation of AFF
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has asked the IRS to investigate a nonprofit it says has been engaging in more political activity than is allowed.
CREW accuses the conservative 501(c)(4) American Future Fund of being an organization that exists primarily to elect Republicans, a step beyond the level of political activity allowed for a 501(c)(4). As evidence, it points to AFF President Sandra Greiner, who was elected to the Iowa Senate as a Republican in 2010, and to the millions of dollars AFF spent against Democrats during the past cycle.
“Any kind of argument that they’re not engaged in political activity is clearly a lie,” CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan told Roll Call. She added that CREW will continue to look into “the abuse of c4 status” all year.
In a statement, AFF responded that CREW is politically motivated.
“This is yet another in a long series of baseless complaints filed by CREW against every conservative organization to further its political agenda,” the group said. “The [Federal Election Commission] addressed almost an identical allegation against AFF in 2009 and found 6-0 that AFF’s major purpose was not the election or defeat of candidates.”
