Heard on the Hill: Going to the Chapel

Rule No. 1 when asking the boss’s daughter for her hand in marriage: Make sure you get permission first.

Justin Spickard did just that. Spickard, a legislative aide in Sen. Bob Corker’s office, popped the question to Julia Corker, a Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pension Committee staffer, on Friday night. But not before getting the OK from dad.

“They had talked about it before,” she explains to HOH.

The couple met in the Tennessee Republican’s office, and they have been dating for nearly a year.

Lucky for them, the union doesn’t violate Senate ethics rules, though it will make it harder for Spickard to climb the ladder at work.

Senate rules allow Members to continue to employ staffers who become related during their tenure, though they block said staffer from being promoted or given a raise. After the wedding, Spickard will only be able to receive across-the-board adjustments like cost-of-living increases.

Despite the pending professional complications, the Senator is thrilled.

“Elizabeth and I are very excited for Julia and Justin, and I have already been getting my marching orders from Lizzy and Julia about what my role will be,” he says.
