Blog Tries to Draft Indiana Republican for Senate

State Sen. Mike Delph has said he’s not ready to decide whether he’ll oppose Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) in the 2012 primary, but someone else is hoping to influence his decision.

An anonymous blogger who refers to himself as Delph Supporter set up a blog called “Draft Mike Delph for US Senate, 2012” and has begun using the forum to attack Lugar and promote Delph.

“The mission of this blog is twofold: to replace Lugar with somebody we can trust, and to present State Senator Mike Delph as that man we can trust,” the blog’s mission statement says. “To win this, we absolutely have to identify a good candidate as early as possible and rally behind him. We believe that Delph is our best hope, both because of his impressive record of authentic conservatism and because of his electability.”

Delph told Roll Call he doesn’t know who’s running the blog, writing in an e-mail that “I thought I knew who put up the website, but I was wrong.” He added that he’s “out of the business of chasing down rumor and innuendo.”

“I am humbled by the folks who have taken an interest in my political career and legislative agenda,” he wrote.

Hoosiers for Conservative Senate, a tea party coalition in Indiana, is looking to defeat Lugar in the 2012 primary and has promised to rally around one candidate it will choose later this year. Treasurer Richard Mourdock is already making plans to run and is expected to seek the group’s endorsement.
