Heard on the Hill: Be My (Co-Sponsor) Valentine

Official communication between Senators tends to be pretty dull, often restricted to run-of-the-mill “Dear Colleague” letters. But HOH hears Sen. Jeanne Shaheen creatively got into the holiday spirit Monday when she sent around information about a piece of legislation.

The New Hampshire Democrat delivered a valentine to her fellow Senators about the Stop Unfair Giveaways and Restrictions (or SUGAR) Act. The sweet-sounding bill would phase out the U.S. Sugar Program, which sets a minimum price for sugar.

Shaheen’s valentine is addressed to “U.S. Senator” and features a candy heart reading “SUBSIDIZE ME.” It’s signed, “From Your Valentine, The Sugar Industry.” The valentine also urges Members to support the SUGAR Act, noting that sugar prices cost consumers $4 billion a year.

“The Senator just thought it would be a fun way to get people’s attention on a serious issue,” spokesman Al Killeffer tells HOH.
