D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton wants everyone on Capitol Hill to know that they work in a really awesome city.

“They need to know this is more than a government town — a lot more,” the Democrat says.

Norton is so keen on getting the word out that she hosted an event, “Ask Me About D.C.,” in the Cannon Caucus Room on Tuesday highlighting some of the city’s best parts.

“We put it together for staff and Members so they can know the latest about what’s happening in Washington and not just what’s in the guide books,” Norton explains.

Attendees were treated to cupcakes and sliders as well as a slew of pamphlets from local hotels and tourism companies. Destination DC and the District’s chamber of commerce were co-hosts for the annual event.

“This year we want to focus on this very large freshman class because we think many of their constituents will be coming to D.C.,” Norton says.

At least one new Member has already shown an interest in getting to know the District better, Norton says. That’s Rep. Trey Gowdy (S.C.), newly appointed chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Health Care, District of Columbia, Census and the National Archives. Norton introduced the freshman Republican to Mayor Vincent Gray and Police Chief Cathy Lanier on Monday.
