A new poll of Virginia voters suggests a Senate race between ex-Sen. George Allen (R) and former Gov. Tim Kaine (D) would be “about as much of a toss up as it could be.”

The Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling poll showed Kaine and Allen tied with 47 percent each.

The pollster found Kaine to be “slightly more popular than Allen.”

PPP also tested Allen, who was unseated by Sen. Jim Webb in 2006, against two other potential Democrats.

Allen led defeated Rep. Tom Perriello 48 percent to 41 percent and defeated Rep. Rick Boucher 47 percent to 42 percent.

The pollster speculated Kaine’s name recognition is a factor in his performance.





PPP also teased a new poll of presidential matchups in the state to be released Wednesday, saying President Barack Obama is “in a very solid position to win the state again next year.”

The poll was taken Feb. 24-27 of 524 Virginia voters. The survey’s margin of error was 3.5 percent.
