Heard on the Hill: Fast Talker

Rep. Jim Moran is a man of many skills. Not only is the Virginia Democrat an 11-term Congressman and a veteran appropriator, but he also has a hidden talent for auctioneering.

He is slated to auction off several prizes next month at a fundraiser for CrisisLink, an organization that works to prevent suicides. Moran, who has played this role before, says he’s drawn to the post because it gives him a chance to tease the crowd.

“The attendees of the CrisisLink event are nice people who tend to be generous,” he tells HOH. “And in the case of those who are not so generous but can afford to be, being an auctioneer allows me to publicly embarrass them.”

Moran will auction vacation and sports packages among other items. The auction is scheduled for April 7 at the Carnegie Institution for Science.
