Heard on the Hill: Here She Comes
The weekly Nebraska delegation breakfast just got a whole lot more glamorous.
Rep. Jeff Fortenberry is scheduled to bring a very special guest to this week’s meeting: Miss America.
The Nebraska Republican was slated to escort Teresa Scanlan, the youngest-ever winner of the competition when she walked down the runway at 17, to the bipartisan breakfast this morning.
Scanlan, now 18, hails from Gering, Neb.
“A thriving oasis of bicameral, bipartisan camaraderie on Capitol Hill actually exists — and tomorrow is getting a touch of glamour with her presence (and tiara),” Fortenberry spokeswoman Kerri Price wrote in an email to HOH.
The breakfast tradition began in 1943 when former Sen. Hugh Butler (R) proposed the idea as a way for members of the delegation to meet and discuss legislation.
Today the meeting is held every Wednesday in the Dirksen Senate Office Building when Congress is in session and is open to all Nebraskans, not just beauty queens.
