California SEIU Backs Hahn in Special Election

The California arm of the Service Employees International Union endorsed Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn in the 36th district special election. According to the Hahn campaign, the SEIU — and its 700,000 members in California — was the last labor endorsement up for grabs, and its backing of Hahn means she has snagged most of the labor endorsements.

“Hahn has stood with hotel janitors and other workers in their fight for living wages and fair treatment at work,” an SEIU press release stated.

Hahn’s top competition, Secretary of State Debra Bowen, has been endorsed by national progressive groups like the League of Conservation Voters and Howard Dean’s Democracy for America.

Sixteen candidates will be on the May 17 all-party primary ballot. If no one takes more than 50 percent, the top-two finishers will advance to a July 12 runoff.
