Heard on the Hill: Rooney’s Snotty Secret

Most of us have skeletons in our closets — maybe an old yearbook picture that we wouldn’t want anyone to see or a particularly ill-advised hairdo.

HOH has discovered a potentially embarrassing chapter in Rep. Tom Rooney’s past: An HOH spy recently overheard the Florida Republican admitting to a colleague that he once played drums for a band called Mucus.

Of course, we were determined to get to the bottom of this sticky revelation and called his office for more information. Spokesman Michael Mahaffey tells us that the band in question formed when Rooney was a high-schooler in Palm Beach. The gross-out name was chosen by the group’s guitarist.

“Which proves that the Congressman was, in fact, once a 15-year-old boy,” Mahaffey says. Mucus was a cover band, he says, playing tunes by the likes of R.E.M., Tom Petty and Journey.

These days, the Congressman only plays the occasional gig, often with fellow musically inclined lawmakers.

HOH is still hoping for a Mucus reunion tour. Our suggestion for a set opener: Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.”
