Ben Nelson Has Healthy Cash Reserve for 2012

Sen. Ben Nelson announced he raised just more than $1 million in the first quarter of this year.

The Nebraska Democrat is facing the toughest re-election campaign of his career, and polls already show him trailing his two GOP opponents.

However, Nelson certainly has ample cash reserves to aid his bid for a third term: He will also report $2.3 million in cash on hand, according to his campaign.

Two Republicans have filed to run against Nelson: state Treasurer Don Stenberg and Attorney General Jon Bruning.

A Public Policy Polling survey taken Jan. 26 and 27 showed Bruning leading Nelson, 50 percent to 39 percent, and Stenberg leading Nelson as well, 45 percent to 41 percent. The survey interviewed 977 Nebraska voters and had a margin of error of 3.1 points.

Roll Call Politics rates this race a Tossup.
