Montana Sen. Jon Tester announced raising more than $1.1 million in the first three months of the year, but his Republican challenger, Rep. Denny Rehberg, is nipping at the Democrat’s heels.

Rehberg raised more than $580,000 and transferred nearly $500,000 from his Congressional campaign committee, bringing his total for the first quarter to more than $1 million, according to his communications director, Brian Barrett.

“Having been in the race for only about seven weeks, Denny is proud of such a strong financial showing,” Barrett said in a statement Thursday. “Montanans from all corners of the state are showing their excitement for Denny’s campaign.”

Rehberg had more than $900,000 in cash on hand at the end of the quarter, and Tester had more than $1.4 million. Tester started the year with about $560,000, nearly even with Rehberg.

“Support for Jon has always been strong and it’s getting stronger because Montanans know Jon is an effective leader who brings Montana values to the Senate,” Tester’s campaign manager, Preston Elliott, said in a statement. “Jon has a powerful record of standing up for Montana families, veterans and small businesses — making the Senate look a little more like Montana. We look forward to building the momentum behind our grass-roots campaign through next year.”
