Arizona Speaker Kirk Adams is stepping down from his leadership post tomorrow — likely the first step in his bid for Congress next year.

Per the state’s resign-to-run law pertaining to non-election years, Adams, who has been strongly considering running for the 6th district seat of Rep. Jeff Flake (R), must resign from the state House before announcing a Congressional campaign. Flake is running for Senate.

According to an Adams spokesman, the only thing announced at this point is an organizational meeting tomorrow to elect a new Speaker.

Once that is done, however, Adams would be free to, in short order, resign his seat and announce a bid.

Should he run, Adams would face at least two opponents in a Republican primary — former Rep. Matt Salmon, who held the seat for three terms before resigning in 2000, and former state Senate Majority Leader Chuck Gray, who declined to run for re-election last year in preparation for a Congressional bid.
