Federal Communications Commission member Meredith Attwell Baker will join the Washington office of Comcast Corp., where she will be senior vice president of government affairs for NBCUniversal, Comcast announced Wednesday.

The new job opportunity for Baker follows the FCC’s approval in January of the merger of Comcast and NBCUniversal. She joined the majority in approving the merger.

“Commissioner Baker is one of the nation’s leading authorities on communications policy and we’re thrilled she’s agreed to head the government relations operations for NBCUniversal,” Kyle McSlarrow, president of Comcast and NBCUniversal for Washington, D.C., said in a news release.

Baker, one of two Republican members of the FCC, was appointed to the commission by President Barack Obama in 2009.

Her term expires at the end of June. Baker previously was acting administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration under President George W. Bush.

The Texas native is married to James Baker IV, the son of James Baker III, the former secretary of State under President George H.W. Bush.

“I’m excited to embark on a new phase of my career with Comcast and NBCUniversal,” Meredith Attwell Baker said in the release.

She will likely face restrictions in her future interactions with the FCC and other top government officials because of federal rules. In addition, an executive order issued by Obama prohibits top government officials from communicating with their former agencies for two years.

The rules, however, allow former officials to conduct “behind-the-scenes” work such as brainstorming with co-workers, who then can communicate with the agency.
