Heard on the Hill: In the Two-Wheel Fast Lane

Any day can be bike-to-work day for Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and friends.

On Monday, LaHood rode to work with the more than 30 regular Department of Transportation bike commuters. The group met at the Washington Monument and pedaled the two-plus miles to DOT headquarters on the Hill.

“The route was safe, and well-marked,” LaHood wrote on his blog. Later he tweeted that he was “feeling good!”

Looking good, too, Mr. Secretary. Based on the pictures posted on LaHood’s Fast Lane blog, HOH can say that LaHood does not mess around when it comes to helmet safety. He sports a shiny black number in every picture.

LaHood and his wife, Kathy, are avid bikers, a DOT spokeswoman tells HOH. They frequently bike the towpath on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and ride on the Capital Crescent Trail.

No word yet on whether the secretary and his security detail will be biking to the office regularly.
