Republicans have begun calling on Rep. Anthony Weiner (D) to resign, but a slim majority of New York City voters believe the embattled Congressman should hold on to his seat, according to polling released by Marist College on Tuesday night.

Specifically, 51 percent of voters in Weiner’s hometown said he should not resign. Thirty percent said he should step down, while 18 percent weren’t sure.

Weiner, who said Monday that he would not resign, represents New York’s 9th district, which includes parts of Queens and Brooklyn. Marist polled 500 voters across New York City’s five boroughs in the hours after he publicly acknowledged having what he deemed “inappropriate” sexual communication with six women over the past three years, even after he was married. Weiner spent much of last week lying about such communication.

Marist reported a 4.5-point margin of error.

The poll asked related questions as well.

Thirty percent of respondents, for example, said that sending lewd photos over the Internet is a common practice by politicians; 54 percent said it was unusual.

An additional 24 percent said that Weiner was truly sorry for what he did, while 64 percent said he was only sorry because he got caught.
