Small Plates: Marvelous Prices, Adequate Pizza

From the outside, Marvelous Pizza on H Street doesn’t look all that interesting.

That unremarkable feeling remains after you step inside. It’s your standard pizza joint with your standard pizza fare.

But to the store’s credit, it doesn’t claim to be any more than that.

Don’t expect the wood-stove pies of nearby restaurants. The new establishment (which opened  June 1, offers the typical array of dishes, from pepperoni pizza to buffalo wings. One additional menu standout is the $1 spring roll.

One draw is the prices. For $3.75, a person can get two slices of pizza and a can of soda. On the other side of the scale is the store’s family meal: For two medium pizzas (each with four toppings) and two pounds of wings, the customer pays $30.

Another store advantage is its delivery standards. In an area where pizza delivery is hard to come by, Marvelous Pizza offers free delivery for orders of $14 or more in a three-mile radius.

The store is the first American outpost of a small Canadian chain. After owner Thu Tran decided to open a pizza place, she opted for Marvelous Pizza because it was little-known and family-owned. She and her son, Thien Nguyen, traveled to Canada to learn the business.

“We don’t have a lot of experience, but we’re going to do the best we can,” Nguyen said.

And maybe that’s all you need.
