House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on Monday praised Vice President Joseph Biden’s handling of the debt ceiling negotiations, saying the “essence” of an agreement is appearing as a result of the bipartisan talks.

“I’ve been very impressed with the way he has conducted his meetings … in a way that has kept the ball rolling,” the Virginia Republican told reporters Monday during his weekly press briefing.

According to Cantor, thanks to Biden’s leadership the negotiators are “beginning to see the essence of convergence on [the] savings” needed to come to a final deal to increase the debt ceiling.

Biden is “desirous, as am I, of keeping politics and ideology out of the conversations,” Cantor said.

Cantor said he has also been particularly impressed with Biden’s insistence that all of the participants be allowed to put any proposal that they desire on the table — even if the administration opposes it.

As a result, negotiators have already identified “well over a trillion dollars” in spending cuts to offset a debt limit increase, Cantor said. He added that the group has made significant strides in finding areas to cut in mandatory spending — including Medicare and Medicaid.
