The list of potential Anthony Weiner successors is starting to grow.

Lynn Schulman, a Queens Democrat who ran for the City Council in 2009, has been approached by Queens County officials about a potential run, according to the New York political blog “Capitol Tonight.”

The blog notes that Schulman would be the first openly gay member of New York’s delegation should she win the special election to replace Weiner, who submitted a resignation letter Monday that will make it official today. The special election has yet to be scheduled by the governor.

Democrats are largely expected to prevail in the left-leaning district whenever the contest takes place.

While there are several possible candidates being discussed, there will be no primary elections. The selection process is controlled by local county party chairmen. Rep. Joe Crowley is the Democratic Party chairman of Queens County, which covers about 70 percent of the 9th district.

Local Democratic consultants suggest Crowley would likely nominate a placeholder candidate to accommodate his desire to absorb part of the 9th district when new boundaries are drawn in the coming months.

Asked whether she would want to be a placeholder, Schulman told “Capitol Tonight,” “I can’t speculate on that, and honestly, I don’t want to at this stage of the game. I was very honored to be asked.”
