With two weeks left until the special election, Democrat Janice Hahn is unleashing two TV ads in an effort to secure the Los Angeles County-based 36th district.

One of the 30-second ads running this week on cable stations throughout the district compares Republican Craig Huey to Sarah Palin and former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.).

“Whose agenda is so extreme they want to eliminate the Federal Reserve during the financial crisis? Craig Huey,” the announcer says. “Which is so extreme they called Planned Parenthood a ‘Murder Mill?’ Only Craig Huey.”

The second ad briefly hits Huey for his “extreme partisan agenda” before highlighting Hahn’s plans for green jobs and to “take on Washington’s spending.” Neither ad mentions that Hahn is a Democrat.

Pre-special fundraising reports are due this week, when Hahn will also be receiving some get-out-the-vote help from Obama for America’s vast grass-roots network. The OFA team is asking volunteers in Los Angeles and Oakland to phonebank for Hahn.

Hahn, who is close with former Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) and from a well-connected Los Angeles family, recently received fundraising assistance from President Bill Clinton, who sent an email to supporters asking for contributions.

Clinton recruited Hahn to run for the seat in 1998 when Harman ran for governor. Hahn lost what was then a more competitive district, and Harman won the seat back in 2000.

Since the 2001 redistricting, Harman, who resigned from the House in February, never won with less than 59 percent of the vote. But Hahn’s campaign is taking no chances with the district’s Democratic lean.
