Democrat Tim Kaine turned in a strong second-quarter fundraising haul in the open Senate seat race in Virginia.

The former governor raised about $2.25 million from April to June, according to figures his campaign will release Monday. Kaine officially launched his campaign just after the second fundraising quarter began and has since been playing catch-up.

His likely general election rival George Allen (R), a former Senator and governor, raised $1.5 million in the first quarter and had more than $1.2 million on hand as of March 31. He has not yet released his second-quarter total.

Kaine’s haul came from more than 4,600 donors. The campaign did not release its cash-on-hand or spending totals.

“Our primary focus for the coming months will be building on our strong network of grassroots supporters who have already committed to helping elect Governor Kaine to the U.S. Senate and making sure every Virginia voter has the opportunity to hear his plans for creating jobs, growing our economy and restoring fiscal discipline in Washington,” Kaine spokeswoman Brandi Hoffine said in a statement.

Allen spokesman Bill Riggs said the money — including a chunk raised via the Democratic donation portal ActBlue — shows Kaine “would be a reliable vote in the Senate for President Obama and the Washington Democrats’ pro-spending, pro-union, pro-big government policies that he championed as chairman of the Democratic National Committee.”
