Democrats to Tap David Weprin for N.Y. Special
New York Assemblyman David Weprin will be the Democratic nominee in the 9th district special election, a well-placed Democratic source in the Empire State confirmed Thursday.
Given the Democratic tilt of the district, Weprin is heavily favored to be the next Member of Congress in the Queens and Brooklyn-based seat.
New York state law empowers chairmen of the local county parties to appoint their candidates. Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) is chairman of the Queens County Democratic Party.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that the special election to replace former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) will be held Sept.13. Weiner resigned after admitting he had inappropriate online communications, including sending lewd photos of himself, with at least six women.
The New York political website Capital Tonight first reported Weprin’s selection on Thursday. According to that report, Weprin is meeting with Democrats in the district Thursday and will file candidate paperwork Friday.
