Heard on the Hill: Journo Preps for Appearance on ‘Colbert’

Stephen Colbert can haz super PAC … and the DREAM Act, too?

Journalist Jose Antonio Vargas revealed he was an illegal immigrant in a recent New York Times Magazine story. The question on everyone’s mind is whether Vargas will be deported for his admission.

So, where’s the best place to discuss this? Why, “The Colbert Report,” of course.

Vargas will be on the Comedy Central show Thursday to discuss his predicament.

To add to his spot, Vargas is soliciting people through the Define American listserv to sign his petition about the DREAM Act.

“I want to be able to tell Stephen on air that there are at least 25,000 people across the country committed to changing our conversation about immigration,” Vargas said in the email.

Colbert’s no stranger to the immigration debate. The comedian testified in character before a House Judiciary subcommittee last year about his time (count it: one day) as a migrant worker.

“This is America,” he said. “I don’t want a tomato picked by a Mexican. I want it picked by an American, then sliced by a Guatemalan and served by a Venezuelan in a spa where a Chilean gives me a Brazilian.”
