A Democratic poll showed state Assemblyman David Weprin (D) leading Republican Bob Turner by 8 points in New York’s 9th district special election.

Forty-seven percent of those polled said they would vote for Weprin while 39 percent said they would vote for Turner, according to a Global Strategy Group survey funded by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Fourteen percent were undecided in the survey of 400 likely voters conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday. It had a 4.9-point margin of error.

Turner, who ran against then-Rep. Anthony Weiner (D) in the district in 2010, was known to 66 percent of voters in the district whereas Weprin was only familiar to 59 percent.

A poll done for the Turner campaign and conducted by McLaughlin & Associates on Wednesday found the race to be a dead heat with both candidates garnering 42 percent.

A Siena College poll released in early August found Weprin ahead by 6 points. Jake Dilemani, Weprin’s campaign manager, told Roll Call on Tuesday that the campaign’s “internal polling is a little stronger than Siena.”

Weprin has a decided money advantage in the final stretch before the Sept. 13 election.
