Freshman Hansen Clarke Gets Primary Challenger in Michigan
Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence plans to run in Michigan’s redrawn 14th district, where freshman Rep. Hansen Clarke (D) recently declared he’s seeking re-election.
“I’ll be announcing soon,” Lawrence told Roll Call last week. “I’m very serious in planning and strategizing so I can be a competitive candidate for Congress.”
The Republican-controlled redraw of the Congressional map wreaked havoc on the two Detroit-based districts, dismantling and swapping much of the current territory represented by Clarke and longtime Rep. John Conyers (D).
Clarke has announced he will run in the 14th instead of seeking re-election from his home in the 13th. Conyers is widely expected to seek re-election in the 13th but has yet to make an announcement.
In any case, Clarke’s district switch provoked a veiled swipe from Lawrence.
“Unlike others here in Michigan, I have always said the 14th,” she said. “I have always been consistent.”
