GOP Leaders Rush Late Cash to Bob Turner in New York

Late money from top GOP leaders is slowly trickling into the campaign of Bob Turner, the Republican nominee in the surprisingly competitive special election in New York’s 9th district.

According to a Federal Election Commission report filed Wednesday, Turner received $5,000 from the Freedom Project, Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) political action committee. He also received $5,000 from People for Enterprise Trade and Economic Growth, the PAC of National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (Texas).

Turner earlier received contributions from Boehner’s re-election account, Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s (Va.) Every Republican is Crucial PAC and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy’s (Calif.) PAC. He also picked up a $5,000 contribution from the Republican National Committee.

A Republican source told Roll Call that additional contributions from other senior members of the GOP are expected soon, although it’s doubtful that money would be useful considering the election is only days away.

Turner faces Democratic Assemblyman David Weprin in Tuesday’s special election. In the last week, Weprin has received at least $7,000 from House Democrats’ campaign accounts, including $2,000 from Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.) and $2,000 from Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Steve Israel (N.Y.).

Roll Call rates the race Leans Democratic.
