During an appearance on a Reno, Nev., Spanish-language radio show, Democrat Kate Marshall received some help from New Mexico state Auditor Hector Balderas as part of a late push for voter turnout in Tuesday’s special election.

Balderas, who is running for Senate in New Mexico, offered a brief endorsement of Marshall in mixed Spanish and English and urged listeners to get to the polls next week. Marshall is running against Republican Mark Amodei for the vacant 2nd district House seat.

Early voter turnout figures from the last two weeks indicate Marshall needs all the help she can get. Through Thursday, Republicans held a 20-point early voting edge over Democrats.

“I wanted to call and endorse Kate Marshall … [who is] very qualified for that position to be running in Nevada. I hope that all the Democrats … get out and support her because it’s a very important race for this country,” Balderas said.

Republicans hold a 31,000-voter-registration advantage over Democrats in the district, which has never elected a Democrat to the House. President Barack Obama, however, did come within 100 votes of carrying it in 2008.

In New Mexico, Balderas is running for the Democratic nomination against Rep. Martin Heinrich, and the winner is expected to face a competitive general election to hold the seat of retiring Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D).
