Another Republican Eyes Challenge to Larry Kissell

State Rep. Fred Steen (R-N.C.) told the Salisbury Post that he is considering joining the already crowded GOP field to take on Rep. Larry Kissell (D), whose 8th district grew substantially more Republican during redistricting.

If Steen jumps into the race, he’ll join a primary field that includes insurance executive Daniel Barry, former Iredell County Commissioner Scott Keadle, former Winston-Salem City Councilman Vernon Robinson and neurosurgeon John Whitley. Whitley told Roll Call that his main reason for running was to repeal “Obamacare.”

Barry and Whitley have said they would be willing to contribute some of their own money to their campaigns. Keadle loaned his campaign $485,000 last cycle, but a campaign aide said he had no plans to put in his own money for this election. One other potential candidate for the 8th district race is businessman Pat Molamphy.
